New photos were added to the Remembrance Day salute that provided a clear view of the Salute Troop command team that day.
Mystery question of the day - Did some of the Senior NCOs change into their new CF Greens after the salute in order to show the new order of dress? Both the RSM, Chief Warrant Officer Brian Cormier and Warrant Officer Al Yelland have made the switch. Either that, or the photos are from a different salute/event, possibly Dominion Day? Remembrance Day 1972. Still in Battle Dress. Take a look at the 1972 Yearbook and you can catch a glimpse of some of the after-salute activities.
I've separated 1941 into the two units: 15th (Vancouver) Coast Brigade RCA CASF and 15th (Vancouver) Coast Brigade RCA NPAM with some new War Diary entries into the NPAM unit.
Some interesting historic trivia to think about: "Notification was received that henceforward the expression, “N.P.A.M.” would be discontinued, and the army would be divided into the “Active” and “Reserve” forces." Does this mean that the units will now be known as 15th (Vancouver) Coast Brigade RCA AF and 15th (Vancouver) Coast Brigade RCA RF? "2/Lt Graham Frederick Blythe and .... were appointed to the Regiment effective 8 Mar 41." Graham Blyth went on to command the 43rd Medium Anti-Aircraft Regiment RCA; then Honorary Lieutenant Colonel and Honorary Colonel of 15th Field Artillery Regiment RCA. "The future Capt. J.A. Hobday enlisted as a Gunner 2 Apr 41." What does that mean? Who is this Hobday fellow? Added some details and photos to our visits with 21 (Gibraltar 1779-83) Battery in 1974. The Commanding Officer, Second in Command and Regimental Sergeant Major visited the Battery in Germany and the Battery followed up by sending over a Second Lieutenant and two Sergeants to Vancouver. Check out the photos and let me know if you have any additional photos or even ones from a previous year, details of which are sadly lacking.
I'm hoping there's some more photographs out there in your own private collection as the ones that I have are pretty fuzzy. Check them out on the 1985 Yearbook page and let me know if you were there and can identify some of the characters.
100+ years of history! It's amazing how much information is out there about the 15th Field Artillery Regiment, RCA and its many perpetuations. The original website was based on the formation of the Regiment in 1920 and its linear history to 2020. The first modification to that plan was the inclusion of the histories of the 31st, 58th, 68th, and 85th batteries prior to 1920. This modification is still being worked on and additional information will be added as time permits.
In the meantime, I have now started on an additional modification with the addition of new pages in 1939 and 1940 to capture the history of the new units that were created to meet the demands of the war. Check out the start of the 15th (Vancouver) Coast Brigade, RCA, NPAM and the 1st Ant-Aircraft Regiment, RCA, CASF. The material is still in its infancy and will be added to as material is found. Would you like to join the team putting the website together? I'm finding the War Diaries fascinating and feel the best way of sharing them is transcribing the text from the .jpeg and .pdf formats so that they can be searchable. I'm looking for volunteers to work on retyping the war diaries into word documents. Would you like to try it out and see if you enjoy spending some time in the evening reading about our early history? email me at [email protected] and I'll send you a month's worth to work on. Salute Troop Commander - Captain Preston?
Assistant Troop Commander - Captain Art Gee Salute Troop Sergeant Major - Warrant Officer George Wood #1 Detachment Commander – #2 Detachment Commander – Sergeant Bill Amos Gunner Doug Loney Gunner Don Booth #3 Detachment Commander – Sergeant Don Friedsam #4 Detachment Commander – Bombardier Leon Jensen? This Remembrance Day salute was different than previous ones as can be seen by the wearing of Combat as opposed to Battle Dress, the lack of red paint on the gun tires, and the painted over white bumpers on the 3/4 Ton SMP. It appears that the new Commanding Officer was striving for a more operational focus for the unit as opposed to a ceremonial. Check out the other photos in the 1973 Yearbook. The guns will be firing at Portside Park at 1100 hrs, 11 November 2016. C'mon down and fall in with the oldtimers! Wow, Just had another one of those, "I didn't know that!" moment with our history. Check out the 1942 Yearbook and Major Diespecker's poem. The audience for the poem was in the millions. And that was before Facebook! Don't forget to check out the rest of the poem....
Remembrance Day 1975
Were you there? Do you have some photos of the event? Can you help identify some of the characters? Take a look at the 1975 Yearbook and see the one's that I've already identified and help me fill in some of the blanks. Lest we forget
